*   Ocean Station Hotel was only in operation 1952-1954 and 1971-1976.  Do not use other years.
**  Ocean Station Quebec was only in operation until 1953.  Do not use other years.
*** Ocean Stations Sierra and Uniform were only in operation 9/50-12/53. Do not use other years.

If you contact the ship on the COM frequency (use the Nearest Airport choice in ATC within about 30 NM of the ship), you can get your position relative to the ship by asking for for Class D Airspace Transition (think of it as requesting information from the ship), or by asking to land.  You can get the weather too - just ask for the Automated Weather broadcast.

The DME has a range of about 100 NM, the typical range of communications with the ship.  And the NDB is a powerful one; it has at least that range.

Let me know of any problems you see in this thread - thanks.

Hi Tom,

I see it's time to install the panel updates for Jen's flying boats and try a crossing!   Grin

CoolI will be departing KSUU for PHNL at 0100Z.  I'm going to use 92607 and set my cruise altitude at 15K ft. I would normally go higher but I want to make sure I see the ship when I call in for my position report.

Hi,

That ship is one tiny dot at 15,000 ft, but let me know if you see it.  Most of the lighting is done in textures, and they die at about 5,000 ft.

Had to look up KSUU - Travis AFB!

Good Luck,

OK Jesse,  it's 0330Z  here in ATL.  You should be well on your way.  Looking at the charts, looks like you might have a little tailwind off the coast slowly shifting to northerly by mid-track.

Let us know how it goes!

Tom, awesome.

CryWoe is me guys.  I found that I did not have the C-97 loaded into the computer.  Had to cancel last nights flight but will get it done today and then report on findings.

Hi all,

I'm flying a daytime Atlantic crossing from South Hampton to Jamaica Bay, NY, USA.

One little glitch in flight planning to note, the radio frequencies of the NDB's on the ships do NOT show up in the flight plan.  I copied and pasted the "readme" into the reference files of all my flying boats, so I have them, but for new users, that might be a problem.  Maybe an entry or field was left blank in the AFCAD?

I haven't actually come in range of one yet, but will edit this post if I have a problem.

Thanks again, Tom!

Yours,
Cheesy

Oh, I'm flying Jen's S.30 LR..."Cleopatra" v10, with panel v11.

I don't know what happened but when I reached the position of 4YN (30N 140W), I did not see anything and also did not have any indication on the radio or the ADF. I am going to have to reinstall and make sure the station shows up in the library. Propliners shows up in the library but I don't see Calclassic  Core.

Tom,

Using the top down view in FS9 I could see November all the way up to FL390; admittedly as a tiny dot.

That's accurate. On a calm sunny day with four guys looking we could often see the ocean station, again, as a tiny dot particularly if it was moving and leaving any wake from all normal jet cruise altitudes.

Again, thanks so much!  It is now installed in both my FS9 and Golden Wings simulators and works exactly as advertised.

Hi all,

Glad some of you are enjoying it!

Jesse, if you don't see the CalClassic Core layer in your Scenery Library then you didn't add it as described in the text file (step 5).  You will need to do this before the ship and NDB's will show up.

I just planned a flight between JFK and EGLL using NDB's ISS, 5B, 7C, 4YC, 4YJ, and FOY, and all the frequencies are showing up fine on the Nav Log.  Remember that there is an "airport" called 4YC, a DME called 4YC, *and* an NDB called 4YC.  You will need to pick the NDB when planning.

If you are using an addon, remember you have to rebuild the scenery index of your planner before the new stations will show up.

Hope this helps,

Problem solved.  I have fs9 on two drives and I was searching for the ship on the wrong drive.

Nan was right where she should be.

Thanks, Quink, but the close up shot of the C-97 was the work of Dave McQueen who is also the painter of the bird. My shot was the long distance one. I made a couple of low pass circuits around the ship and was getting ready to climb back up to altitude.
