Flight dynamics by FSAviator - see Reference file (F10). This FDE is not designed for AI use - it will not work. Download AI propliners at http://www.calclassic.com/.

NOTE: This is the later version of the DC-6 with square tipped props and CB-16 engines. For the earlier model with round tipped props and CA-15 engines download the DC-6 by Jens Kristensen from AVSIM.

VERSION 6 FEATURES:

1. The default panel is now designed for 16:9 widescreen monitors. If you use a different monitor refer to the Other Monitors folder in the FS2004/Aircraft/dc6pnlKMCC or FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes/dc6pnlKMCC folder.

2. The slow engine start is now the default in FS2004. If this version crashes your computer, refer to the FS2004 Realistic Engine Start.txt file in the FS2004/Aircraft/DC-6B CB-16 folder.

3. The two speed supercharger system is now set up by default.

VERSION 5A FEATURES:

1. There is now a checklist file available from the kneeboard (F10).

VERSION 5 FEATURES:

1. The models now include versions without radar. To specify a specific model, edit the livery section of the plane's aircraft.cfg file:
model=              Domestic cockpit, radar
model=noradar       Domestic cockpit, no radar
model=intl          International cockpit, radar
model=intl_noradar  International cockpit, no radar

VERSION 4 FEATURES:

1. All doors in this model are now able to be opened. It also features airstairs by John MacKay (thanks!) at the passenger door, maintenance stairs at the crew door, and chocks on the wheels.

2. To display the airstairs, you must apply the parking brake, shut down engines 1 and 2, and open the passenger door using Shift E.

3. To display the maintenance stairs, you must apply the parking brake, shut down engines 3 and 4, and open the crew door using Shift E 3 (hold down the Shift key and press E, then release both keys and press the number 3 key on the main keyboard).

4. You can also open the underfloor baggage doors by pressing Shift E 2. Their main lighting is controlled by the baggage compartment light switch on the overhead panel in the 2D cockpit and the VC. They will also come on by turning on all the lights with the L key.

5. To display the chocks, you must apply the parking brake and shut down the engines on that side of the plane.

6. There is some mesh deformation around the opening doors; I have minimized this as much as I am able (I'm not a GMAX expert). Thanks to Milton Shupe, Bill Leaming, and others at the FreeFlight Design Shop for help in reducing this.

7. The colors of the airstairs are controlled by the stairs_t.bmp texture. It can be night lit using a proper stairs_L.bmp texture, but this has not yet been done. The stairs_t.bmp file of the DC-6B PSA livery is plain bare metal, and can be used for any repaints that do not come with a specific stairs texture.

8. The color of the maintenance stairs and interior cabin is controlled by the Interior.bmp file. These can be copied to other liveries to get the color of the stairs/interior you want. The current DC-6B stairs colors are: American orange, United blue, Western red, PSA and National gray. Interior textures by Manfred Jahn, modified by Frank Gonzalez and Tom Gibson.

9. New fuel controls in the VC. There are now 4 separate fuel control levers, one for each engine. Also, the cross feed levers now work correctly. Details in the panel manual (CalClassic Modifications and Throttle/Pedestal pages) found in the FS9/Aircraft/dc6pnlKMCC/DC6 PANEL OPERATIONS/Start Here.htm or FSX/Simobjects/Airplanes/dc6pnlKMCC/DC6 PANEL OPERATIONS/Start Here.htm file.

VERSION 6B FEATURES:

1. The CHT value displayed is now based on fuel flow (related to horsepower) instead of using the FS defualt variable, which is mostly dependent on RPM (incorrectly). You can also click the CHT gauges to display two numbers for each engine. The top number is the "target" CHT that will be reached eventually; the bottom number is the current CHT displayed digitally. Click again to remove the numbers.

VERSION 6 FEATURES:

1. Damage Module by Robert Graf. This module has been a separate addon, and is now incorporated into the basic package. To activate this module click twice on the NO WARN message in the FE/NAV Notepad until Damage appears. See the separate Damage Module Readme.txt file for information on this new feature. NOTE: The Damage setting will remain active between FS sessions, and will affect all aircraft that use this damage system.

2. Fuel Dump System. There is a new FD icon on the panels. Click this and a fuel dump subpanel will appear. For details refer to the CalClassic Modifications page in the FS9/Aircraft/dc6pnlKMCC/DC6 PANEL OPERATIONS/Start Here.htm or FSX/Simobjects/Airplanes/dc6pnlKMCC/DC6 PANEL OPERATIONS/Start Here.htm file. NOTE: This gauge requires FSUIPC to be installed into your flight sim program. Get it here: http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html You must install the correct version for your flight sim version!

3. Automatic Fuel Loading. On the CalClassic Planner notepad page, if you plan a flight and then click on the green Total Fuel value your fuel load will be filled to that value. The main tanks will fill first, and then when full the AUX tanks will fill (as per the fuel loading diagram in the CalClassic Modifications page of the panel manual). This will also fill your water and oil tanks. If you already have the amount of fuel listed on the Total Fuel line then no extra fuel will be added, but the water and oil tanks will be filled. This can only be done on the ground with engines off and parking brake set, otherwise the value will not be green and cannot be clicked.

4. Oil and Water/Methanol Refilling. If on the ground with engines off and parking brake set you can refill the individual oil and ADI water levels by clicking on the Oil Quantity and Water Quantity gauges. You can also refill them all by using the Notepad Fuel Autoload feature.

FS2004 FEATURE:

1. Wing Views: Press Ctrl-Shift-1 and Ctrl-Shift-3 to view the wings from the cockpit, and Ctrl-Shift-7 and Ctrl-Shift-9 to view from the passenger cabin.

OTHER FEATURE:

1. Real prop reverse (throttle to idle, click reverse lever, power to 30" MAP, allow plane to slow down, throttle to idle to go back to forward thrust)

Douglas Aircraft knew it had a winner with the DC-4, since it was obvious
that with hundreds of military examples it would become the standard
post-war long distance airliner. However, the presence of the Lockheed
L-049, which was generating significant orders, led Douglas to decide
to develop a stretched and improved version of the DC-4. Since the two
major advantages of the L-049 were speed and pressurization, the new DC-6
would be powered by new and powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines,
stretched by almost 7 feet over the DC-4, and would be pressurized to
allow the plane to fly at fuel-economical high altitude, which also
avoided the worst weather. Since this decision was made during WWII, it's
not surprising that the actual DC-6 prototype was built to a USAAF
requirement, the XC-112. The first flight didn't occur until February 15,
1946, however, and with the end of the war the military had little use for
the plane. Douglas quickly converted it into a commercial project, which
became the DC-6.

The airlines had seen the potential of the XC-112 long before the war
ended, and orders were placed as early as September 1944 for post-war
deliveries. American Airlines received the first plane (from it's 50 plane
order) in November 1946, with United Air Lines following with it's 20 plane
order. However, United had the honor of introducing the DC-6 into scheduled
service, on the one-stop US transcontinental route, making the flight in only
10 hours. This compares quite favorably with the 11 hours taken by the L-049
Connie and 14 hours by the DC-4. The DC-6 did have one black mark on it's
record; the plane was grounded for 4 months from November 12, 1947 following
two internal fuselage fires. The last DC-6 was delivered to Braniff on
November 2, 1951, the production line being used instead for the stretched
DC-6B, with better economics (although slightly reduced performance). A total
of 175 DC-6's were produced, and proved to be very reliable performers.
Because of this reliability and ruggedness, many DC-6's are still flying
today, mostly in cargo work.
